5 Fire-Resistant Roofing Myths Every Contractor Should Bust

Understanding and addressing common myths about fire-resistant roofing can help contractors better protect homeowners and grow their business. 

Wildfires are on the rise across much of the U.S., and roofing contractors are often a homeowner’s first line of defense. But even within the industry, myths and misconceptions about fire ratings persist. These misunderstandings can manifest in lowered customer trust and missed opportunities to upsell the right systems.

Myth 1: “Fire resistance” and “fireproof” are interchangeable.

Even the most fire-resistant materials can fail under extreme conditions. UL 790 Class A systems, for example, are tested to handle severe fire exposure, but given enough heat and time, any material will degrade.

All of these are performed on the entire roof assembly – deck, underlayment, shingles, vents, and accessories. If any one component allows ignition, excessive flame spread, or deck penetration, the entire system fails.
